Chapter Seven
A second muffled knock came at the door, and Daniâs heart rate almost shot through the roof. If she ignored it, they might try the lock, but sheâd already wedged the chair under it. She didnât want that to happen. If only sheâd changed the locks as Sean advised. Maybe if she turned on a light, theyâd think twice about trying to enter. She flicked on the table lamp as she edged closer to the door, breath lodged firmly in her throat to choke her.
âDani? Dani!â
Relief swamped her and turned her bones to liquid as she recognized the harsh whisper.
âSean.â She dragged the chair from under the door handle and slid it away before she turned the lock and flung open the door. âYou nearly gave me a heart attack.â She wrapped her arms around herself and glared at the tall cowboy on her doorstep. Instead of her pulse settling back to normal once the fear left, it ratcheted up a pace and set her blood humming with desire.
An apologetic smile spread across his face as he gave the familiar shy dip of his head, a total contrast, she knew, to the man before her. âMay I come in?â Speechless, she stepped to one side as he passed her the puppy and shouldered his way through the door. âI wanted to check on you.â
With the frantic wiggle of the puppy in her hands, Dani had no other choice but to ignore the cowboy and give Honey her undivided attention as the creature squirmed in her arms. Her tongue fast and furious, Honey swiped it over Daniâs face with little nips and kisses. âI hope youâre not going to pee on me, girl.â
âNope. She just peed outside. Three times, thereâs no pee left in her.â
âI bet there is. Thereâs always pee left in this dog.â
Sean plucked Honey from Daniâs arms and placed her on the floor where she spun in a tight circle to chase her tail. âShe wonât pee now. Sheâs learning.â
âSheâs grown already. So quickly.â Itâd been a week since Dani had seen her.
âYeah, I think so.â
Daniâs heart melted at the look on his face as he stared at the puppy. It was the look of a man in love. Warmth flowed through her veins as she studied him. She lived for the day someone gazed at her the same way. Before she got carried away with wishes for the impossible, she glanced at the clock realizing how late it had become.
âDid you want something, Sean?â
He brought his head up, and his eyes sparkled with vitality in the lamplight.
In the quiet, momentary pause, Daniâs blood began to swim.
âI needed to know you were okay. That you werenât going to lose too much sleep over this break-in.â
Sheâd not given the break-in another thought from the moment she opened the door to Sean. Heâd wiped her mind clean of any worries and replaced them instead with deeper, darker thoughts she had no control over.
âIâm fine. Thank you for checking.â
He needed to go before she ripped off his clothes and licked him all over.
